The little black dress grew up and and became the little black maxi. Like its predecessor, the black maxi is a versatile must-have every woman should own – it can be dressed up for the ball or dressed down for the beach. Black, as we all know is a flattering and classic colour that suits any skin tone, hair colour or body size – I cannot stress just how much I love this piece, it has become a true staple in my closet from summer through to winter and here’s hoping this post can inspire you to see the endless styling possibilities this underrated dress can bring.
- Casual Chic
Exude a chilled out boho vibe by pairing the black maxi with flats and an oversized tote bag. Gold accessories clash beautifully against the black fabric and portray an earthy, organic feel to the outfit. For a hot summer’s day of exploration – this dress is an absolute must when it comes to my holiday packing!
- Layered Up
Just because it’s a staple of the summer doesn’t mean that you have to banish the maxi to the back of your closet when the weather turns a bit nippy! I love love love (is that enough loves?!) layering up with an oversized cardigan – this particular one, courtesy of dad’s closet – borrowing, as we all know, gives it that extra cosy feel. If you are going to layer up with a thick cardigan like this, make sure the dress is form-fitting and flattering – otherwise you could run the risk of looking like a bag lady. And speaking of bags: pairing classic with classic – a small cross body or long chain bag like the Chanel 2.55 contrasts great with the swathes of fabric.
- Black Tie Ball
St Paddy’s Day is right around the corner and some of you, like myself, might have the odd party to attend in celebration. For me it happens to be a more formal affair and thank goodness for my trusty black maxi. As much as I would love to sport a full length emerald green gown; I’m trying to be “smarter” about my shopping and a piece like that just screams “one time use”. So, I shall channel St Patrick through my multitude of accessories. I find that when it comes to accessorising a neutral piece like the black maxi – it helps to pick bright colour and immerse yourself in different shades; thus preventing the dreaded “matchy-matchy” look and still conforming to a specific theme.
