I made a lunch pitstop on a day of busy touristing and sampled a freakin’ amazing sandwich! Totally relaxed atmosphere – to even call it a café would be incorrect; Mr Crackles is more like a trendy takeaway; set up with bar counters and stools for eating-in (should you wish). But the sole reason people are flocking in and out of this place is for the rolls!
Fresh and warm, crusty-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside; the bread is just the beginning of all kinds of awesome coming out of the kitchen at Mr Crackles. I ordered the infamous Crispy Pork Belly Roll which was bursting with chunks of meat, crackling and vinegary ‘slaw. If only they did “taster” sizes because after one bite I was desperate to try all the other rolls being made behind the counter but due to the sheer mass of my single sandwich, I knew I wouldn’t be able to…Would you believe, they do a Manwich, which boasts double the meat and half the salad!?!
The pork belly was moist and full of flavour which was further heightened with the porky deliciousness from the crackling – crunchy and rich but not oily: you couldn’t ask for more perfect crackling! The Vietnamese-style ‘slaw was integral to the sandwich, the sweet vinegar cut through the richness of the pork and chili sauce is a must! In all honesty, it’s not the most ladylike thing to eat but hey when a sandwich is this good, who cares!? Eat up I say!
