Enter the Dragon

Kung Hei Fat Choi everyone!

2012 ushers in the year of the dragon – very exciting stuff (especially for me as I am myself a Dragon baby). Not only does Chinese New Year give us in Hong Kong an extra long weekend (monday -wednesday are public holidays) but also is an opportunity for the extended family to get together and celebrate the new year. I myself have my massively extended family (from my mum’s side) coming over and it’s sure to be a day (and night) full of food, drink, good cheer and most importantly mahjong!

So, what does the year of the Dragon have in store for us? Dragons are the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac so are seen as very important animals – they represent strength, luck and power. As a result, in many countries that observe the Chinese zodiac, there is always a bit of a baby boom whenever a dragon year comes around. This year is also more specifically a Water Dragon year – these being extremely rare. “Water” also happens to be a homonym for “money” in chinese slang and represents money flow in feng shui, therefore a Water Dragon year is predicted to be a year of prosperity and wealth.

Dragons are to expect a super year ahead: re-entering a dragon year allows other dragons to reinvigorate their enthusiasm and confidence. According to the chinese zodiac almanac, 2012 will be a year of new beginnings, social gatherings and plenty of money. Not too shabby and if these predictions prove to be true then I certainly have an interesting year ahead!
